Pre-Dance Classes

Ages 2.5–4 | Pre-Ballet · Pre-Jazz · Pre-Tap | Boys & Girls

At VDC, our pre-dance classes are designed to make that first experience feel exciting and encouraging — introducing young dancers to music, movement, classroom routines and the confidence that comes from doing something on their own.

Their First Dance Class Is a Big Deal

At this age, dance is about much more than learning steps.

Young dancers are learning how to listen to a teacher, take turns, follow a routine, move with music and participate independently in a classroom.

Some children walk into their first class without looking back.

Others need a few weeks to feel comfortable.

Both are completely normal.

Our teachers are experienced in working with young children and understand how to build trust, confidence and independence gradually.

What do they learn in Pre-Dance?

Confidence + Independence

Learning to enter class, follow a teacher and participate without a parent in the room.

Coordination + Body Awareness

Developing balance, movement control and awareness through age-appropriate exercises.

Listening + Classroom Skills

Learning to follow instructions, take turns and become comfortable in a structured activity.

Music + Imagination

Exploring rhythm, creativity and expression through movement.

Pre-Ballet

Pre-Ballet introduces young dancers to the graceful foundations of ballet through storytelling, music, and imaginative movement.

Creative movement exercises help children express themselves while building the foundations of classical ballet.

Pre-Jazz

Pre-Jazz classes are energetic and playful, introducing children to rhythm, movement patterns, and expressive dance.

These upbeat classes allow young dancers to explore their personality while learning the basics of jazz dance.

Pre-Tap

Pre-Tap introduces dancers to rhythm through sound and movement.

Tap classes are joyful, engaging, and an excellent way to build musicality at an early age.

Which Class Should We Start With?

Many families begin with Pre-Ballet paired with either Pre-Jazz or Pre-Tap.

Ballet helps develop posture and foundational technique, while jazz or tap introduces rhythm, energy, and creativity.

If your dancer is loving their classes, they can always explore all three styles as they grow and add on during the season.

For Parents of First-Time Dancers

Starting dance at 2.5, 3 or 4 can feel like a big step for parents too.

Parents do not remain inside the classroom, but our studio lounge gives families a comfortable place to stay nearby while dancers are in class.

It may take a few classes for a child to settle into the routine. Our goal is not to rush that process.

We want dancers to gradually learn:

I know this place.
I know my teacher.
I can do this.

That is the beginning of independence.

Ready for Their First Class?

You don’t need to know which style is perfect before you begin.

Start with a class that fits your child’s age and personality — and let them experience VDC for themselves.

Not Sure Where to Start?

Tell us your dancer’s age, personality and what they’re drawn to, and our office team can help you choose the right first class.
